What we can work on
Pick whatever is closest to what you need. We can sort out the details in your first message.
Conversation for adults
For people who know the grammar and still freeze when they have to speak. We talk. About anything except the weather.
Exam preparation
Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency, IELTS, and school-leaving exams. The format, and the language that earns the marks.
English at work
Emails, meetings, presentations, and that awkward business of saying something firmly without sounding terrifying.
Children and younger learners
Through games, pictures and stories. No lists of words to memorise and forget by the following Thursday.
Writing that sounds like you
Emails, essays, applications, personal statements. Correct English is one thing; English that sounds like a person is another.
Starting again from nothing
Absolute beginners, and people who studied for years and are convinced none of it stayed. Usually more stayed than they think.
Why me
I learned English as a foreign language myself. I know what it is to think in one language and speak in another, and to hear the gap between them.
I have 18 years. I am learning myself English. My chef is very strict. Eventually I will study medicine. I am here since two weeks.
None of those is carelessness. Every one of them is your own language translating itself, faithfully, into the wrong English. A native speaker will tell you it is wrong. I can tell you why — and that is the difference that stops it coming back.
I am a writer and a publisher as well as a teacher. I run Paw & Pen, and I have written The Complete Maturita Companion, the Vocabulary with Charlie workbooks for B2–C2 learners, and a shelf of storybooks and coursebooks besides.
Which means I do not buy materials for my lessons. I write them — for the person in front of me, about the things that person actually needs to say.
How it works
Three steps, and none of them commits you to anything.
1
You write to me
The form below. A few sentences about who is learning and what you want to get better at. I answer within 24 hours.
2
A short first call — free
Twenty minutes on video. I find out where you are, and you find out whether you like me. If not, nothing happens and nothing is owed.
3
Your first lesson
Online, one to one, usually sixty minutes. Materials are included and you get them afterwards, so you can go back to them.
Questions people ask
Where do you teach?
Online, over video, so it makes no difference where you are. I teach students across Europe and I live in Crete myself.
What about time zones?
I am on Greek time (EET). Most European hours work comfortably, and evenings are usually possible.
What does it cost?
We agree the price and the timetable when I answer your message — it depends on what you need and how often. Ask me and I will tell you straight away.
Do I have to be a certain level?
No. I teach from the first word to C2. If you are not sure what your level is, that is one of the things the free call is for.
What if I have to cancel?
Tell me in advance and we move it. I am not a government department.
Do I get materials?
Yes, and they are included. I write them myself for whatever we are working on.
Write to me
No obligation. I answer within 24 hours — if you hear nothing, please check your spam folder and write again.
