You saved four hundred quotes this year. Name one.

Not the topic — the actual sentence. The one that made you stop reading

The four-hundred-year-old fix

A commonplace book is a single notebook in which a reader copies out, by
hand, the passages worth carrying forward. Oxford and Cambridge taught the
practice as a matter of course. Locke published a method for indexing his.
Milton kept one, so did Woolf, Darwin and Marcus Aurelius — whose
commonplace book you may have read under the title Meditations
without knowing that is what it was.

Handwriting is the filter. Copying a passage out costs enough that you only
do it for the ones that earned it, and what survives that filter is, by
definition, what mattered.

Why roses

Between the Balkan and Sredna Gora mountains in central Bulgaria there is a
valley where Rosa damascena has been grown since the seventeenth
century. It blooms for roughly three weeks. The petals are picked by hand
before dawn, because the oil begins to leave them as the day warms, and it
takes somewhere near three thousand kilograms of them to make one kilogram of
oil.

Almost every step is inefficient, and almost none of it has been shortcut in
four hundred years, because the shortcuts produce something else. That seemed
like the right idea to build a notebook around.
